On June 27-30, 2024, our team members presented their research on RUTA’s inaugural conference in Ukraine. Their presentation, part of the ROCIT project, examined the ambivalent reception of Ukrainian Roma in Poland as forced migrants and contextualized this within the broader historical experiences of Roma marginalization.
Roma in Ukraine – Fighters for Democracy, Human Rights, and Justice
On May 16, 2024, on Roma Resistance Day, Janush Panchenko participated in a public event titled “Roma in Ukraine – Fighters for Democracy, Human Rights, and Justice” in Berlin. The event highlighted how throughout history, the Roma in Ukraine have been not only victims but also active fighters for freedom and justice, despite persecution and genocide.
Safe Homes. Red Cross EU Office: From Emergency To Preparedness For Future Welcoming Initiatives
Our team member took part in a meeting about safe houses and sustainable housing solutions for refugees organised by Red Cross. Elżbieta Mirga-Wójtowicz participated in the second panel discussing the importance of building lasting partnerships. The panel highlighted that no institution can address all aspects of newcomers’ reception alone, especially during emergencies. Partnerships are essential to bridge gaps between public authorities and hosts.
ROMA WEEK 2024
ROCIT’s team member took part in the Roma Week, annual event at the European Parliament: “Future of Roma, Sinti, and Travellers in Europe”, which addressed significant political, economic, and human rights changes in Europe.
