Participation of ROCIT Researchers in the International Workshop in Belgrade

On 8–9 October 2025, ROCIT researchers Elżbieta Mirga-Wójtowicz (Centre of Migration Research, University of Warsaw / Fundacja Jaw Dikh) and Tetiana Storozhko (TENET / ROCIT) took part in the international workshop “Inclusive Education and Commemoration of the Genocide of the Roma”, held in Belgrade, Serbia, and organized by Terraforming in cooperation with the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) and European partner institutions.

The workshop brought together scholars, educators, and representatives of museums and memorial institutions to explore how inclusive remembrance can strengthen education about the Roma genocide and connect it to contemporary struggles for equality and recognition.

Elżbieta Mirga-Wójtowicz participated in the opening panel “Preserving and Activating Memory Spaces of Roma Persecution and Genocide”, highlighting Polish initiatives such as the Małopolska Roma Martyrdom Trail, local memory work in Szczurowa and Borzęcin, and the importance of Roma-led narratives in shaping collective remembrance. Tetiana Storozhko moderated the session “Intergenerational and Intercommunity Transmission of Roma Genocide Memory”, which discussed how family stories, artistic practices, and transnational collaborations contribute to preserving and transmitting memory among Roma communities across generations.

Participation in this event is part of ROCIT’s broader research focus on Roma memory, identity, and transnational networks, emphasizing the intersections between remembrance, education, and social justice in contemporary Europe.
