ROCIT team members present at CASA conference in Pardubice

In 6-8 November 2025, several members of our team attended the 8th Biennial Conference of the Czech
Association for Social Anthropology
(CASA) conference in Pardubice
. Martin Fotta and Jan Ort (together with Tina Magazzini) organized a panel entitled Romani Studies in Flux: Examining Shifts, Setbacks, Challenges, and New Directions.

Jan Ort presented his paper Focus Groups in Ethnographic Experimentation: Research on Assisting Ukrainian Romani Refugees. It was a reflection on the specific methodology we used in our research, where the “ethnographic field” proved to be unstable and shifting over time. Ignacy Jóźwiak presented his paper Roma Activism in Ukraine: Ethnography, Participation, and What Might Come Out of It (and for Whom).

The panel sparked a broader discussion on the current direction of research among Roma, which subsequently spilled over into informal conversations throughout the conference.
