In July 2024, our team members participated in the EASA conference in Barcelona. Markéta Hajská presented her paper The Main Railway Station in Prague in Spring 2022: Unequal Position of Roma Refugees from Ukraine and the Mechanisms of their Racialization and Stigmatization as part of a panel on Othering and Racialization of Minorities and Immigrants in Fortress Europe. In her contribution, she presented a detailed description of the unequal treatment of Ukrainian Roma by state and non-state actors in the Czech Republic in the first months after the beginning of the full Russian invasion of Ukraine. Jan Ort presented his paper, Roma Securitizng the Ukrainians: Rethinking the “Dominated“ Position of the Roma in the Context of War in Ukraine as part of a panel Ethnographiing Racism Nowadays. In his contribution, he reflected on what the war-related situation suggests about the understanding of the position of Roma (not only) in Central and Eastern Europe. At the same time, he showed how Romani actors in the Czech Republic reflected on different modes of racism and integrated them into understanding and shaping their position in broader social relations.
