Ukrainian Roma as IDPs and hosts: Outlines from fieldwork in the Zakarpattia region

Our team member, Ignacy Jóźwiak, took part in an important workshop on Internal Displacement in Ukraine: Action, Advocacy and Leadership, in February 19-20, 2026 in Warsaw, organised by the Centre of Migration Research, University of Warsaw and Prof. Megan Bradley, McGill University, Montreal, bringing together researchers, activists and representatives of administration.

Ignacy presented part of his work within ROCIT project in a presentation titled: Ukrainian Roma as IDPs and hosts: Outlines from fieldwork in the Zakarpattia region. The audience could learn more about ethnographic fieldwork among Roma IDPs from the East and South of Ukraine, and local Roma communities who host them. This part of the fieldwork was conducted in three locations in Zakarpattia region (near Mukachevo and Uzhhorod) between June 2024 and June 2025. Ignacy presented the characteristics of the local communities and their initiatives aimed at Roma IDPs with particular focus on the role of the Roma Charismatic (neo-protestant) churches. The broader regional context of Zakarpattia and its role as a safe haven and ‘alternative center’ was also provided.
